Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a dedicated
athlete, an injury can bring your training to a halt.
In addition to using RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation)
for injuries, acupuncture and sports massage can help
you to recover faster.
When you train, your muscles release lactic acid (a
cellular waste product); this leaves you feeling sore
and achy. A sports massage can flush out these waste
products, giving you faster recovery time. Most professional
sports teams are staffed with trainers who provide some
form of sports massage, which has been shown to give
athletes a winning edge and reduce injury from repetitive
training.
If the affected area has been strained or is inflamed,
then acupuncture would be the most effective treatment.
Acupuncture reduces inflammation as a response to the
needles being inserted into the body. The body then
releases a cascade of anti-inflammatory chemicals at
the site, causing a reduction of pain and inflammation.
Athletes are often advised to receive acupuncture to
get their inflammation under control first, then to
follow up with a session of sports massage. Both therapies
complement each other in helping reduce inflammation.
